Biography

Seaman First Class Carmine Thomas Garripoli

Served 1943-1945

July 16th, 1924-Janurary 1st, 2023

On November 30th, 1942, Carmine left his home in Flushing, New York to enlist in the United States Navy. On June 30th of 1943, he stepped foot on the USS Boston and did not return home to his family until September 26th, 1945. When recounting his time on board his naval home, he would do so with a half-smile and humble tone of voice. Carmine never thought of himself as a hero, and if you mentioned that he was, he told you that the heroes were his brothers who never made it back home.

Aside from his family, one of Carmine’s prized possessions was the memory book he made of his time with his shipmates in Hawaii. Filled with postcards and pictures he had collected, he included photos and names of his closest brothers. Where they were from, all the memories they created together, and the good times that they had with one another. He even kept and included his inauguration into The Trusty Shellbacks on March 9th, 1944.

When Carmine left the service, he met a few potential suitors until he found the third and final love of his life, his bride of 70 years, Doris. They eventually settled down in Middlesex, New Jersey with their one son. From there, they had one grandson, and four great-grandchildren. Constantly surrounded by love and family, the happy couple lived a beautiful and full life even to the days they passed.
